On Wednesday, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) approved the release of a Final Environmental Impact Statement/Report (FEIS/R) for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (LACMTA) Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor project.
The FEIS/R for the $1.76 billion project, which calls for construction of a new light-rail corridor through the city’s southwest area to L.A. International Airport (LAX), will be presented to LACMTA’s board on Sept. 22, agency officials said in a prepared statement.
“FTA approval of the environmental document for the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor represents a big step forward,” said L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.
The construction project will foster 7,800 jobs, according to L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
“We have asked the federal government to change their rules and regulations so that we can award contracts to construct this and other lines to local companies that hire local workers,” he said.
