The Federal Transit Administration has awarded $450,000 to the Southern California Transit Training Consortium (SCRTTC) to expand its workforce development training program through Dec. 31.

The SCRTTC was created in January 2004 in response to the industry’s need for trained technical and mechanical workers in southern California. The consortium involves 27 community colleges, transit agencies and universities that aim to work together on a learning model for workforce development.

SCRTTC was originally funded by the 2005 Safe, Accountable, Flexible and Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). The consortium’s original award was $1.28 million in research and technology funds over a four-year period.

To date, the SCRTTC has provided nearly 21,000 hours worth of training to more than 1,600 transit employees.
