The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recently announced it awarded 77 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grants totaling $909.4 million to transit agencies and state departments of transportation.

Provided through FTA assistance programs, the grants will be used to purchase new equipment, construct new facilities, repair and upgrade transit systems, and install safety and security equipment.

Among the grant recipients:
• Chicago Transit Authority will receive $240.2 million to conduct preventive maintenance, rehabilitate the subway system, and renovate rail stations and support facilities;
• Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will obtain $225.1 million to upgrade Metro Rail and Metro Bus facilities and equipment, widen the staircase at the 7th/Metro Red Line station in downtown L.A. and replace fiber optic equipment in the rail system;
• Denver Regional Transportation District will receive $18.6 million to design and construct Denver Union Station; and
• Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will obtain $17.7 million to implement a track pad/shock absorber rehabilitation program, purchase and install emergency tunnel carts and storage cabinets, expand the agency's chemical sensor detection system, upgrade fare machines and purchase four prime movers to be used as work trains.

Since President Obama signed ARRA into law on Feb. 17, the U.S. Department of Transportation has issued more than $1.4 billion in transit grants. The bill includes $8.4 billion for transit capital improvements.
