Federal Transit Administration announced May 23 that it had entered into a $53.6 million Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA) with Utah Transit Authority for the construction of UTA’s Medical Center Light Rail Transit (LRT) line.

The project would extend the existing LRT system 1.5 miles from University Line Station at Rice-Eccles Stadium to University of Utah Health Science Complex. The proposed Medical Center line would include three low-platform stations and connect to the existing North/South corridor.

UTA plans to begin service on the line in 2004, eventually averaging 4,100 weekday trips. The agency expects 3,400 of those passengers would be new to the system.
