The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) yesterday announced the award of $15.8 million in grants to 37 projects that aim to improve operations of transit agencies impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The projects selected as part of the FTA's Public Transportation COVID-19 Research Demonstration Program will demonstrate innovative solutions, including cleaning and disinfecting protocols for transit vehicles, facilities and equipment, exposure mitigation measures and contactless payment systems, FTA officials said in a press release.
Transit-rail systems or state transportation departments that obtained grant awards included the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, $600,000; Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, $600,000; New Jersey Transit, $600,000; Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, $584,618; Utah Transit Authority, $508,200; San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, $450,000; Connecticut Department of Transportation, $450,000; and Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, $247,500.
