FTA issues streetcar grant to Charlotte

advertisement

Yesterday, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded a $25 million grant to Charlotte, N.C., to build the first phase of a streetcar system.

The 1.5-mile initial segment will include six stops, serving locations such as the Charlotte Transportation Center near Time Warner Cable Arena, the city’s government center and Central Piedmont Community College. The city plans eventually to expand the streetcar system to 10 miles, serving the entire Charlotte region. The city has acquired three vintage streetcars to operate on the line.

The project is being funded through the FTA’s Urban Circulator Grant Program. The Charlotte Area Transit System will operate and maintain the streetcar system after it’s constructed.
