FTA pre-authorizes WMATA system improvements

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently received pre-award authority from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to advance more than $220 million worth of projects designed to address urgent safety and state-of-good-repair needs.
The projects are funded through the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act, which provides WMATA $150 million annually. The money will be matched by an additional $150 million from Washington, D.C., the state of Maryland and state of Virginia, WMATA officials said in a prepared statement.
WMATA plans to spend:
• $44.4 million to rehabilitate track components, such as running rail, ties, fasteners, third rail insulators and turnouts;
• $34.5 million to rehabilitate the Orange, Blue and Yellow lines between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Stadium-Armory Metrorail station;
• $20 million to overhaul rail components, including parking brakes, truck controls, coupler control boxes and air compressors;
• $17.3 million to replace and upgrade heavy-duty track maintenance equipment;
• $12.4 million to replace rail-car components, such as wheels, trucks, brake systems, HVAC and traction motors;
• $10.3 million to implement National Transportation Safety Board recommendations;
• $4.9 million to rehabilitate escalators; and
• $2.4 million to rehabilitate elevators.
