On Thursday, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will provide $3 million to support programs that hire, train, develop and retain transit workers.

“With our transit systems growing in ridership and complexity, we must begin recruiting and training the skilled workforce to match the challenges of expansion and innovation,” FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff said in a prepared statement.

Funding will be provided to transit worker training programs in New Orleans and Denver; vocational programs in Massachusetts and New Jersey that prepare high school and college students for transit careers; leadership training programs at California, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio transit agencies; and a distance learning center for rural transit agencies in South Dakota.

Twelve programs qualified for the federal dollars. FTA received 35 applications valued at a total of $7.3 million.
