Continuing its six-year Infrastructure Renewal Program to improve customer service and safety, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA Metro) plans to conduct major facilities work on its Red Line between Friendship Heights and the Medical Center stations from Oct. 1 through November.

Workers plan to install cable and conduit, replace fire lines, conduct repairs in tunnels and stations, test power cables, replace water pumps and retrofit floating slabs.

"Floating slabs" are large sections of concrete that rest on doughnut-shaped rubber pads; they support the tracks, absorbing train vibration and noise.

Because trains will need to be single tracked during this segment of the project, WMATA officials plan to increase headways to 15-minute intervals, instead of the customary 5- to 10-minute intervals.

No work is scheduled to be done during normal weekday peak hours or during normal hours on weekends.
