Fare increase to take effect tomorrow on Capitol Corridor

Effective Tuesday, the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority will increase fares an average of 5 percent on the Amtrak Capitol Corridor intercity passenger-rail service in northern California.
The fare hike was included in the rail service’s revenue projections for fiscal-year 2012, which will help to sustain current service levels and offset the rising cost of diesel fuel, authority officials said in a prepared statement.
The service depends on fares and an annual state allocation of funds, they noted.
“Given the state’s dismal financing condition, the fare increases enacted twice a year are required to maintain the level of service currently provided by Capitol Corridor,” authority officials said.
