North County Transit District (NCTD) recently received $152 million in federal funds, enabling the agency to proceed with its light-rail project connecting Escondido and Oceanside, Calif.
Planned for more than 15 years, the project is expected to start later this year, with completion scheduled in 2005. The 22-mile line would
carry 12,000 passengers a day in its first full year of operation.
The $350 million project is designed to relieve congestion on local highways, improve air quality and improve mobility for area residents, NCTD said.
