U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater Sept. 21 announced $112.3 million in federal grants for California transit projects.

"By helping improve California’s transportation infrastructure, we not only contribute to safety and mobility, but to economic growth as well," Slater said in a prepared statement.

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority would receive the lion’s share — $49.1 million to design and construct the Metro Red Line North Hollywood rail extension.

Not far behind, Sacramento Regional Transit District was awarded $24.5 million for its 6.3-mile South Sacramento Corridor Project — a light-rail extension connecting six stations between downtown Sacramento and Meadowview Road.

And $19.6 million was awarded to Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority for the Tasman Corridor Extension to its 21-mile Guadalupe Corridor light-rail system. The agency also would receive $3.4 million to purchase eight 60-foot articulated buses.

Smaller grants include $4.7 million to North San Diego County Transit Development Board to replace 15 buses with compressed natural gas buses, and $4.1 million to Orange County Transportation Authority to purchase eight liquefied natural gas buses and construct a Buena Park intermodal facility.

Meanwhile, Riverside Transit Agency would receive $2.5 million toward a Perris bus facility; Southern California Regional Rail Authority, $2 million towards San Bernardino Metrolink extension; City of Folsom, $1.5 million toward design and construction of its Historic Railroad Block Multi-Modal Transportation Facility; and City of Vallejo, $1 million to purchase three buses.
