On Friday, Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Ananth Prasad, U.S. Reps. John Mica (R-Fla.) and Corinne Brown (D-Fla.), and Federal Transit Administration Regional Administrator Yvette Taylor joined local funding partners and several hundred supporters at a groundbreaking ceremony at the future SunRail station in Altamonte Springs to signal the start of construction on the SunRail commuter-rail project in central Florida.
“Today’s momentous event marks not just the beginning of construction, but the beginning of a new chapter in transportation in Orlando and central Florida,” said Prasad in a prepared statement.
The next challenge will be to ensure the commuter-rail system’s success by convincing community members to ride SunRail trains, he said.
Construction on SunRail’s first phase will include double-tracking, signal improvements, and the construction of stations and an operations control center. The 31-mile first phase of SunRail will serve 12 stations, linking DeBary to Orlando. Phase two will serve five additional stations, north to DeLand and south to Poinciana. SunRail commuter-rail service is expected to begin in 2014.
