The Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority on Saturday held a dedication ceremony for the opening of two stations in Azusa, Calif.One station is located in downtown Azusa, while the other is near the campuses of Azusa Pacific University and Citrus College. The latter station serves as the temporary terminus of the Gold Line, which will eventually extend to Montclair, Calif. The first phase of the $1 billion Gold Line Extension project extends 11.5 miles from Azusa to Pasadena, Calif. In June 2010, crews broke ground on this phase of the project, which is slated to be turned over to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) for pre-revenue service in late September 2015.
The authority has been holding a series of ceremonies in corridor cities for each light-rail station in anticipation of the completion of the Azusa-to-Pasadena segment of the project.Metro anticipates starting passenger service in Spring 2016, although an exact date has not yet been determined. "When this phase of the Foothill Gold Line opens next year, thousands of riders will be able to travel between the San Gabriel Valley and Downtown Los Angeles without a car," said Los Angeles Mayor and Metro Board Director Eric Garcetti. "This new transportation option will relieve traffic, improve mobility and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is a smart investment in our region's sustainable future."
