Canadian Transport Minister David Collenette July 31 confirmed that Jean Pelletier, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s longtime chief of staff and former Quebec mayor, was appointed VIA Rail chair.

As Quebec mayor for 12 years, Pelletier served on a task force studying the rapid-train project between Quebec and Windsor. He later moved on to federal politics, including a stint as president of the Federation of Cadadian Municipalities.

In 1991, he joined Chrétien, serving beside him almost 10 years.

Collenette also appointed Marc LeFrancois chief executive officer. Both appointments are effective Sept. 1.
