Yesterday, the Citi Foundation announced it awarded more than $2 million worth of grants to community development organizations in 20 urban areas. Proceeds will be used to help cover pre-development costs for the construction, rehabilitation or revitalization of affordable housing, retail centers and neighborhood facilities in low- and moderate-income communities.

The grants are being awarded through the Citi Foundation Partners in Progress Grant Program, an initiative that began in the New York region in 1997 and recently was expanded to a national program.

The foundation awarded $100,000 grants for 21 projects. Among the recipients:

• Austin, Texas’ Foundation Communities, which plans to develop 150 units of affordable, mixed-income, green housing near the MetroRail commuter-rail line, which is scheduled to open later this year.

• The Asociación Puertorriquenos en Marcha, which is involved in a transit-oriented development project near Philadelphia’s Temple University Regional Rail Station. The project calls for building 120 units of affordable green housing and 20,000 square feet of green commercial space in North Philadelphia.

• The San Diego Capital Collaborative, which is pursuing a mixed-use, mixed-income development that will provide residents with access to affordable housing, public transportation, social services and community recreation facilities.

• Massachusetts’ Somerville Community Corp., which is leading a community planning collaborative near the Green Line Extension Project in Boston.
