GCRTA ponders transit management academy

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority’s (GCRTA) board is considering using a $286,687 federal grant to offer a Public Transit Management Academy class to employees, agency officials said in a prepared statement. The classes would be conducted at Cleveland State University (CSU).
GCRTA received notice of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant earlier this year and has been working with CSU on class details. Up to 90 employees would attend the academy via three sessions of the year-long program.
The classes would be conducted by CSU’s Center for Leadership Development at the Levin College of Urban Affairs. Several “real-world” projects would be included in the instruction, GCRTA officials said.
Among various topics, the program would provide employees advanced training in change management, strategic development, performance measurement and transit leadership, said GCRTA Chief Executive Officer Joe Calabrese.
“This is a first in the transit industry, and an amazing opportunity from the FTA to work with CSU,” Calabrese said. “We hope it will be a model for other transit agencies to follow.”
