GCRTA posted ridership spike on St. Patrick's Day

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) registered 100,000 rides on March 17 for the St. Patrick’s Day holiday, resulting in what agency officials believe is likely the largest single special event in the authority’s history.
“For a system that usually provides 200,000 rides on an entire weekday, providing 100,000 rides in about seven hours was challenging, but successful,” GCRTA officials said in a prepared statement.
The agency anticipated large crowds for the St. Patrick’s Day parade and other activities. The Red, Blue and Green lines accounted for more than 70,000 rides, and several bus lines also were filled to capacity. Dozens of additional trains and buses were put into service to handle the anticipated ridership hike.
GCRTA staff now have turned their attention to preparing for the city’s next major event: Thursday’s sold-out home opener of the Cleveland Indians major league baseball team, agency officials said.
