The service expansions and improvements continue to mount for Toronto's GO Transit. Yesterday, the agency announced it will conduct environmental assessments to expand service into several communities and purchase additional rolling stock.

This summer, GO Transit expects to analyze track requirements, station locations, layover facilities and other infrastructure needed to expand commute-rail service from Oshawa to Bowmanville on the Lakeshore East line. The agency also will study an expansion of all-day service between Union Station and Milton by adding two tracks. Both assessments are scheduled to be complete in spring 2010.

Meanwhile, GO Transit is purchasing 25 bi-level passenger cars from Bombardier Transportation, bringing the agency's total fleet to 482 cars. To be delivered by May 2010, the cars will be used primarily to expand Lakeshore East and West service by adding more 12-car trains.

The agency also is exercising an option with MotivePower Inc. to purchase an additional 10 MP40 locomotives, which are scheduled to be delivered in late 2010.
