Germany’s Local Transport Authority of Lower Saxony (LNVG) recently ordered 40 double-deck coaches and eight Class 1 146.1 locomotives from Bombardier Transportation. The contract, which includes maintenance for 15 years, is worth $136.9 million.

Designed for local and regional transport, the locomotives will feature a passenger information system and a door control function. The locomotive's 99.2 mph maximum speed also makes the unit suitable for regional express transport, according to a prepared statement. Bombardier plans to manufacture the vehicles at its Kassel, Germany, facility.

The 40 state-of-the-art double-deck coaches will feature first- and second-class compartments, and are being produced both as cab and trailer cars. Bombardier plans to manufacture the cars at its Gorlitz, Germany, plant.

The trains are scheduled to be delivered between July and October 2005.

Since January 2002, LNVG has ordered 106 double-deck coaches and 18 locomotives from Bombardier.
