Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority and Department of Rail and Public Transportation today announced the launch of a new Amtrak service in Richmond.

The train departed for Washington, D.C., early this morning from the Main Street Station. The train's launch commemorates the first milestone of Transforming Rail in Virginia, a $3.7 billion rail expansion program aimed at improving rail service in Virginia.

In March, Virginia officials finalized agreements with Amtrak, CSX and Virginia Railway Express to implement the program.
