Greater Cleveland RTA adds Segway to patrol fleet

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) has obtained a two-wheel Segway, which the agency’s service quality supervisors will use to monitor trolley and bus service.

“Rather than having someone on foot patrolling 20 blocks, or in a car that would be stuck in traffic most of the time, the Segway is giving our staff more speed and mobility,” said GCRTA Chief Executive Officer and General Manager Joe Calabrese in a prepared statement.

The Segway is designed to run 14 hours on a fully charged battery at a fraction of the cost to buy or maintain a four-wheel vehicle, GCRTA officials said.

“Other transit agencies, like those in Chicago and New York City, have successfully integrated several Segways into their fleets, reducing fuel costs and increasing speed of service on crowded city streets,” they said.
