Rail News: Passenger Rail
In the five years since Sept. 11, 2001, the U.S. government has allocated about $20 billion for aviation security and only $400 million for ground transportation security. But that spending imbalance is beginning to shift, according to a new report entitled “Beyond Aviation: The Emerging Ground Transportation Security Market.”
Released by the Convergent Security Group, the report predicts U.S. ground transportation security spending will exceed $300 million this year and $1 billion during the next three years. Most of the dollars will be spent on implanting “intelligent” video surveillance systems, explosives detection equipment, analytical software and systems to improve supply-chain efficiency, Radio Frequency Identification-based tracking, access control and systems integration.
The report identifies several drivers behind increased ground transportation security spending: passage of funding legislation, political pressure to increase transit security spending, and concerns heightened by terrorist attacks on the London and Mumbai, India, transit systems.
