Group seeks to spur U.S. maglev projects

High-speed magnetic levitation (maglev) proponents have taken another step to stimulate construction of the systems in the United States by forming The United States Maglev Coalition.

The coalition, led by former Bethlehem Steel executive Richard Cochran, includes members from a cross-section of interests — labor, steel, concrete, engineering and technology.

"Maglev is the lynchpin of future travel in America," said Cochran in a prepared statement. "The convergence of excessive highway congestion, unacceptable pollution levels and a national over-reliance on foreign oil is a compelling set of circumstances for America to finally pursue this safe, high-speed and low maintenance mode of transportation."

High-speed intercity maglev is supported by magnetic force rather than wheels, and propels train-like vehicles on concrete and steel guides.

Maglev projects are proposed for Pittsburgh, Baltimore to Washington, Las Vegas to Anaheim, Calif., the Southern California Association of Governments L.A. Basin Network, and Atlanta to Chattanooga, Tenn.
