Guelph, CN close agreement on land for new intermodal station

This week, CN and the city of Guelph, Ontario, closed on an agreement that allows the city to acquire CN land for a new intermodal transit terminal.
The $1.5 million purchase enables the city to acquire the land it needs to build the open-air terminal, and work now will resume onsite in the next four to six weeks, city officials said in a prepared statement.
The city previously purchased an existing Greyhound station and plans to remove the building to make room for the new transit platform.
A pending agreement with VIA Rail Canada Inc. is expected to transfer ownership of a VIA Rail station to the city this summer.
The city is planning a $1 million interior renovation designed to preserve the station's national heritage status, improve accessibility and accommodate the needs of all VIA Rail, GO Transit, Guelph Transit and Greyhound users, city officials said.
The renovation project is separate from the intermodal terminal construction, and is not supported by provincial or federal funds, city officials said. The station's interior work is scheduled for completion in 2012 as part of the city's capital budget.
