The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) has given the green light to Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. to begin construction today on the first section of the elevated guideway for the city’s rail transit system.
With all the necessary state and federal approvals in hand to begin the work, Kiewit is scheduled to begin drilling for the concrete foundation shafts and support columns, HART officials said in a prepared statement.
“This significant milestone for the rail project moves us closer to providing Oahu residents with an alternative to sitting in horrific traffic congestion,” said HART Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer Dan Grabauskas.
Scheduled to open in 2019, the 20-mile system will run from East Kapolei to Ala Moana.
“The HART Board of Directors remains strongly committed to ensuring the project stays on tack and is completed on time and within budget,” said Chairwoman Carrie Okinaga.
