The New Mexico Department of Transportation recently awarded joint venture partners Twin Mountain-Herzog and HNTB Corp. the design-build contract for the $115 million second phase of the Rail Runner Commuter Rail Project.

HNTB already has completed most of the project design using computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) technology, and Twin Mountain-Herzog recently began constructing the 18-mile rail line. The above-ground portions of the line, which will be adjacent to and under Interstate 25, will be built in the median of the interstate.

"Using the latest CADD design technology on this project has been like pushing a fast-forward button," said Mark Urban, HNTB national leader for design-build, in a prepared statement. "It shaved nearly three months off the design schedule."

HNTB's scope of design work includes earthwork and track, structures, drainage, utility coordination, and maintenance of traffic and access.

Slated to be completed by late 2008, the project also will include two passing sidings, six new railroad bridges, one new highway bridge and several concrete box undercrossing structures.
