As we kick off the summer season this Memorial Day weekend, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) expects more than half of U.S. vacationers plan to use local public transit systems in the cities they visit.
According to APTA's Green Travel Forecast survey, 51 percent of travelers said they would rely on a city's public transit system — the highest percentage recorded since APTA conducted the initial survey two years ago. Of those surveyed, 49.2 percent said the financial impact of using public transportation to reduce their total travel costs had a strong effect on their travel plans. In addition, 54 percent said the availability of a public transit system played a role in choosing their destination, and of those, 28 percent said it had a "strong effect" in determining the destination.
