Hampton Roads Transit to solicit public comments on proposed fare hike

Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will host eight public hearings in January on proposed fare increases for light-rail, bus, ferry and paratransit services.

Last year, HRT's commission approved a proposal to raise the cost of a single ride by 50 cents and eliminate some categories of other fares to simplify the agency's fare structure. The public will be able to comment on the proposed changes at each of the eight hearings, HRT officials said in a press release.

HRT has not raised its basic fare since 1999. The governing board will hold another public meeting on the proposal in February, when the public can address the board as a group. If adopted, the fare change would take effect in July.
