Rail News: Passenger Rail

Heber Valley Railroad offers Winter Olympics tie-in on tourist train

Heber Valley Railroad passengers now can get a taste of what it’s like to be a Winter olympian.

The 100-year-old Utah steam railroad is offering passengers the option to ride a 1,000-foot tubing hill with its new Tube ‘n Train excursion. The railroad makes a stop at Soldier Hollow Station, where passengers can take surface lifts to the hill and experience the site of country skiing, biathlon and Nordic combined events held during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Heber Valley sells a limited number of tickets for the tubing hill so passengers can avoid long trains. Passengers who don’t want to tube can remain on the train, which travels three hours to Vivian Park in Provo Canyon, picking up tubers on its way back to Heber City.

The excursion began as a pilot program last year; due to popularity, the railroad has made it a regular winter event.
