Hennepin County breaks ground on Minneapolis rail transit hub

Hennepin County officials recently broke ground on the $79 million “Interchange Project,” which will be developed into what officials describe as the “busiest rail transit hub in Minnesota.”

To be located next to Target Field in downtown Minneapolis, the facility will serve as a central, multi-modal transportation hub and community gathering space, county officials said in prepared statements.

The interchange hub will link light- and commuter-rail transit networks, as well as bus operations, and bike and walking trails. The facility will connect about 500 trains arriving and departing daily through the Metro Blue Line (Hiawatha light-rail), Metro Green Line (Central Corridor light rail) and Northstar (commuter rail) line. The interchange is slated to open in 2014.

“The interchange will be a signature piece of public infrastructure,” said Hennepin County Board Chairman Mike Opat.
