On May 1, Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas unveiled the first METRORail car — more than 20 years after proposing a light-rail system.
Assembled by Siemens Transportation Inc., the car will be tested on a 1.7-mile test track. The low-floor vehicle is 95 feet long, seats 72 and accommodates 200 passengers.
The vehicle is one of 18 that will begin operating on the 7.5-mile light-rail line from downtown Houston to Reliant Park Jan. 1, 2004.
