Yesterday, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation that will foster the creation of a universal fare card for Chicago Transit Authority, Metra and Pace riders. The law requires the Regional Transportation Authority to implement the fare card system by 2015.

The measure also is the first step toward making free wireless Internet available on trains and buses throughout the region, officials from Quinn’s office said in a prepared statement. In addition, the new law requires Metra to provide web-based, real-time train arrival information, and lays the groundwork for installation of automated external defibrillators on Metra trains.

“These improvements will make public transit a more robust and convenient travel option, boosting economic development and increasing access to schools and universities throughout the region,” Quinn said.
