Yesterday, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) announced the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will receive $11 million in federal dollars to help fund an $18.5 million project to repair a station at Loyola University, and to conduct an environmental study on the extension and modernization of the Red and Purple lines.

The design work for the station improvement project is under way, with construction slated to begin in spring 2012. A member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Durbin secured $10 million in federal funds for the project in the fiscal-year 2010 Transportation and Housing Appropriations bill, and $1 million in the SAFETEA-LU, according to a press release from Durbin’s office.

“A long overdue facelift to this station will enhance Red Line train service for the thousands of customers who use the line to travel to and from their daily activities,” CTA Chairman Terry Peterson said. “It’s the backbone of our system and part of our larger plans to renovate the Red Line.”
