Iowa Pacific introduces intercity passenger-rail service in New York

On July 23, Iowa Pacific Holdings subsidiary Saratoga and North Creek Railway (SNC) launched passenger-rail service between North Creek and Saratoga Springs, N.Y. — the first privately operated, for-profit and regularly scheduled intercity passenger-rail service in the United States in more than 40 years, Iowa Pacific officials said in a prepared statement.
“While there are numerous privately operated tourist railroads, SNC is operated as a true passenger railway, meeting a stronger set of regulatory requirements for equipment and operations,” they said.
Regularly scheduled trains will stop at several intermediate stations along the route and connect with the Amtrak Ethan Allen Express in Saratoga Springs. The service — which features full-length dome cars — currently is available Thursday through Monday.
SNC trains operate on track that was saved from abandonment by two New York governments, Warren County and the town of Corinth, which upgraded the line, according to Iowa Pacific. SNC is financially responsible for maintaining the line and is exploring additional track improvements.
In Saratoga Springs, SNC trains operate over Canadian Pacific track to access the station, which is owned and operated by the Capital District Transportation Authority.
