Joint venture to begin underground phase of BART's Warm Springs extension

On Monday, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) reached another milestone on the Warm Springs extension project. The agency issued a notice to proceed to the Shimmick Construction Co. Inc./Skanska USA Civil West California District Inc. joint venture to begin the project’s underground phase.
In June, the joint venture won a $136 million contract for the first phase. The firms will build the trackway embankment south of Walnut Avenue and the BART subway from just north of Stevenson Boulevard, through Fremont Central Park — including a portion of Lake Elizabeth — and beneath Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
Construction to extend the line 5.4 miles southward to a new Fremont station is expected to begin in fall.
Later this year, the agency plans to seek bids for the second phase, which includes above-ground elements such as the line, trackwork, station and other systems. Construction is slated to begin in 2010 and conclude in 2014.
