advertisement
Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. recently delivered the last batch of new subway cars to New York City Transit (NYCT).
The cars are part of a $360 million contract NYCT awarded to Kawasaki in December 1998. The deal included a base order of 100 R143 cars, but NYCT ordered an additional 112 cars in 1999.
R143 cars are fitted with high-technology devices designed to control a broad spectrum of passenger comfort features and improve safety, according to a prepared statement. Features focus on noise suppression, improved ride quality, heat and air conditioning, a more effective public address system, and controls that provide smoother acceleration and deceleration.
