Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. recently received a $10 million order from Siemens Transportation Systems Inc. for 188 undercarriages to be used on Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) passenger cars.

Undercarriages are expected to be delivered by October 2005. The contract is Kawasaki’s first for undercarriages from Siemens.

Meanwhile, the Department of Telecommunications and Energy (DTE) recently approved MBTA’s plan to reintroduce AnsaldoBreda low-floor vehicles on the Green Line. MBTA completed a 15-month study of the vehicle’s design, upgraded Green Line track and tested the vehicle, designed to address accessibility issues.

To introduce the vehicles into service smoothly, the authority plans to put eight cars on the Green Line's B branch, and continue working with the DTE to operate the cars on the line's C, D and E branches. MBTA expects to have 100 Breda cars in service by 2004’s end.
