L.A. MTA contemplates fare restructuring to offset deficit
advertisement
On April 12, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) plans to hold a hearing to gain public input on fare-restructuring proposals. The changes would be the authority’s first fare revisions in eight years.
MTA is considering two proposals, both of which recommend lowering the cash fare from $1.35 to $1.25 to make fare structure more equitable.
One option proposes no change in senior citizen, disabled person and student fares. Other recommendations include replacing tokens and transfers with a $3 day pass, and increasing the weekly fare $3, semi-monthly pass $6 and monthly pass $10.
The agency expects the restructuring to raise revenue and offset potential operating deficits, which could reach $1.4 billion in the next 10 years, according to a prepared statement.
If the board approves any changes, they would go into effect Nov. 1.
