LA Metro: Federal funding will bolster Olympics-related projects

"We have a responsibility not just to make the games run smoothly, but to make investments that will benefit our communities long after the games are over," U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said in a press release.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) has been awarded over $800 million in federal funding to improve mobility and upgrade transportation infrastructure ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will be held in the L.A. area.

The funding includes more than $700 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 and the recently passed fiscal-year 2024 appropriations bill, as well as $139 million to reconnect communities and strengthen mobility across highway and arterial barriers from the Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods grant program.

"The federal funding Metro recently received is a perfect example of what happens when local, regional, and federal partners work together," said L.A. Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins in a news release.

The Transportation, Housing and Urban Development's FY2024 appropriations bill recently signed by President Biden included hundreds of millions of dollars for L.A. Metro's Westside Purple Line Extension Project (Sections 2 and 3) and East San Fernando Valley Transit Corridor Project.

The projects will reshape, transform and reimagine mobility while ensuring the region is prepared to welcome the world for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic games, said Wiggins.
