Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro), local and federal officials yesterday held a ceremony to mark the start of construction on the final section of the Purple (D Line) Extension Project.
The extension will connect downtown Los Angeles and the Westside via a high-speed, high capacity subway in 2027, according to an L.A. Metro news release.
A $1.3 billion federal grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will be delivered through a multiyear full funding grant agreement under the New Starts capital investment grant program.
The grant agreement does not require L.A. Metro to pay it back as in previous funding agreements for the first two project extensions. The remaining funds needed to build the project will come from L.A. Metro’s own local voter-approved transportation sales tax measures.
About half of the project's total $9.5 billion cost will be covered by the FTA.
