The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) late last week held a ceremony for the dedication of the future Expo/Crenshaw station.

The celebration was attended by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Federal Transit Administrator Nuria Fernandez, U.S. Reps. Maxine Waters and Karen Bass (both D-Calif.), California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, and L.A. Metro Chair Ara Najarian and CEO Stephanie Wiggins.

The Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project, now the K Line, is a $2 billion project in the communities of Los Angeles, Inglewood and El Segundo. The 8.5-mile line will provide a link to destinations in downtown Los Angeles, the Westside and the Los Angeles International Airport, L.A. Metro officials said in a press release.

The project will extend light rail from the existing E Line at Crenshaw and the C Line in El Segundo, and include eight new stations. The Crenshaw station will serve as a transfer station for the E and K lines.

"[Our] rail investment in our South L.A. communities is more than just about expanding the transit system — it’s about creating greater mobility, jobs, access to opportunity and improved quality of life for residents in this corridor," said Najarian.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is providing $263.9 million to the project through grant programs such as the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER), Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Program and a Surface Transportation Block Grant Program. The state of California is contributing $215 million toward the project.
