The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (L.A. Metro) July rail ridership rose 3.23% from July last year, reaching a 78.4% recovery of pre-COVID-19 ridership in July 2019.
Total rail boardings for the month were 5,789,887. Weekday rail boardings accounted for 4,417,710, a 73.4% recovery of where weekday rail boardings were in July 2019, L.A. Metro officials said in a press release.
Individually, the A Line saw a 19.46% year-over-year increase from June last year, with 1,871,941 trips taken. Ridership on the E Line grew by 13.17% year-over-year. July’s busiest rail line was the B Line, with 1,898,643 boardings.
L.A. Metro reported an increase in leisure ridership on both rail lines and bus lines, citing the high number of weekday events such as concerts, festivals and sporting events as the reason for a 2.62% increase in weekday rail ridership in July from last year.
Additionally, the L.A. Metro's board approved a safety and security upgrade in July. Three rail stations will begin piloting taller fare gates, and three security programs and pilots will expand across transit centers. A new weapon detection technology will be piloted at two transit hubs in the rail system, and law enforcement and L.A. Metro Ambassador presence have been expanded on both the bus and rail systems.
