LA Metro preps for track expansion at Union Station

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) announced today it has begun preparation work for a track expansion project that will add capacity and improve connections between rail and bus services and future high-speed rail service at Los Angeles Union Station.

Once the work is completed, the Link Union Station Project (Link US) will allow Metrolink and Amtrak trains to enter and exit the station from both the south and north, as well as accommodate future high-speed rail service, L.A. Metro officials said in a press release.

As part of an early work package of improvements, L.A. Metro has begun demolishing a structure in downtown Los Angeles. Removing the building is critical to begin improvements for better transit capacity and flexibility in the Union Station tracks. The station is a vital transportation hub for the state’s evolving subway systems and regional, intercity, commuter, freight- and light-rail networks.

Union Station is next to the 101 Freeway and connects with the L.A. Metro’s A, B and D rail lines, the J rapid bus line and over a dozen local bus routes.
