The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) and federal officials last week announced a $893 million Federal Transit Administration grant to help fund construction of the East San Fernando Valley light-rail project.
Funding will be delivered over the course of several years through a full funding grant agreement with the FTA, L.A. Metro officials said in a press release.
The future 6.7-mile light-rail line will connect existing transit services in the San Fernando Valley, including Metrolink, Amtrak, the Metro G and B Lines and other projects in the works, with 11 total new stations.
Officials estimate the line will open in 2031. It will be the first local stop, commuter-rail service to return to Van Nuys Boulevard in over 70 years, officials said. Utility adjustment work for the $3.57 billion project is already being done; street improvements and construction of utilities are expected to start later this year.
L.A. Metro also added the first-ever Cultural Competency requirement to the project’s contract, requiring that there is engagement with stakeholders in the community impacted by the project. The plan includes workforce training and business opportunities to support diverse communities of the area.
