The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (L.A. Metro) Gold Line Eastside Extension project recently received the 2010 Outstanding Project of the Year award from the Underground Construction Association of Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration.
The organization recognized the $898.8 million, six-mile light-rail project for tunnel design, construction management and construction methods, which enabled the tunnel to be completed “with virtually no surface impact,” L.A. Metro officials said in a prepared statement.
The project marked the first time L.A. Metro used pressure face tunnel boring machines. Construction began in 2004 and the line opened in November 2009.
