The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has released a draft environmental impact report for a project aimed at reducing the time it takes for its Red and Purple line subway trains to turn around at LA Union Station.

The project calls for widening the tunnel entrance to the subway between the Division 20 subway yards and Union Station, along with adding switches, track and other necessary infrastructure.

The project also would include building a new ventilation shaft and new storage tracks, as well as reconfiguring existing tracks and access roads to accommodate a turnback facility. A new traction power substation and emergency backup power generator also would be installed.

The work would enable Metro to run more trains on the Red and Purple lines, agency officials wrote in a blog.

Subway ridership is expected to grow as Metro expands its rail system. Late last month, the agency broke ground on the second phase of the Purple Line Extension.
