Last week, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (LACMTA) board approved the remaining portion of the $5.6 billion Westside Subway Extension project.

The board’s action included final approval of staff recommendations for a Constellation/Avenue of the Stars subway station in Century City, LACMTA officials said in a prepared statement.

The action officially approves four new stations and alignments in Beverly Hills, Century City, Westwood/University of California-Los Angeles and Westwood/VA, which adds the remaining five miles to the approved and certified subway extension. In April, the board approved the initial project phase from Wilshire/Western to Wilshire/La Cienega.

Upon approval from the Federal Transit Administration, the entire project will move into the final design phase, LACMTA officials said.

Under current plans, construction would begin in 2013. Depending on funding availability, the project would be built in three phases: from Western to La Cienega by 2020, to Century City by 2026 and to Westwood by 2036.
