LACMTA lets preliminary design contract for downtown connector

An AECOM/Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) joint venture has obtained a contract from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) to provide conceptual planning and preliminary design services for the $1.4 billion Downtown Light-Rail Connector project.
Known as the Connector Partnership, the joint venture will be responsible for creating an advanced conceptual plan for the project, as well as preliminary engineering, with options for design support services during construction and system activation, PB officials said in a prepared statement.
Depending on the availability of federal funding, construction could begin in 2013 and be completed by 2019.
The 1.9-mile-long underground rail connection would link LACMTA’s Gold and Blue lines with the new Expo light-rail line through downtown Los Angeles, enabling riders to travel from Azusa to Long Beach, and from the Eastside to Culver City, Calif.
