The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced this week that Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad set new pandemic-era ridership records on June 14.
LIRR carried 191,197 riders — or 66% of pre-pandemic ridership — surpassing the previous record of 187,800 riders set June 10. Metro-North carried 174,340 riders, or 67% of pre-pandemic ridership, surpassing the previous record of 163,900 riders set May 24.
The new record follows LIRR becoming the first MTA transit system to surpass its baseline pre-pandemic levels as of June 11, MTA officials said in a press release. The railroad then carried 117,900 riders, or 105% of its pre-pandemic baseline. Metro-North came very close to its baseline when it carried 95,100 riders — 99% of the baseline — the same day.
MTA is continuing to encourage riders to return to rail through fare discounts, including a 10% discount for monthly passes, a new 20-trip ticket saving 20% on peak one-way fares and the City Ticket, which offers a reduced flat fare of $5 on weekends and off-peak weekday trains.
"With fare discounts, City Ticket expansion, and great weather, the LIRR and Metro-North anticipate setting more records in the near future," said Metro-North President and LIRR Interim President Catherine Rinaldi.
